Health Storylines has chosen me to be a brand ambassador for their Self Care Challenge initiative! Being a brand ambassador means that I will be posting self-care challenges. I’m super excited about this first challenge because it’s all about personal hygiene!

Why Hygiene Is Important

Maintaining a good hygiene is so important your mental health, and it’s often overlooked because it seems so obvious. Taking care of your body is not only good for your physical health, but it also helps with self-confidence. It’s an easy mood booster! I know that when I feel awful, but I take the time to do my makeup or relax in the bathtub, I always feel better.

I personally struggle with my hygiene and many of us in the mental illness community do. I’ve been depressed and unsure about my future. Therefore, I’ve forgotten to wash my hair and brush my teeth. I didn’t notice until I saw my reflection in one of the mirrors near the jewelry while I was out getting groceries. My hair was thick with grease, flaring out from underneath my hat. Has it really been that long? I thought. I felt embarrassed and ashamed.

That is why I’m typing this while I’m in the bathtub! I hate water. I’m like a cat in many ways… (I also love to sleep in the sun). But I need to bathe, so I make deals with myself. If you take a bath, you can use one of your bath bombs. If you brush your teeth tonight, you can have a donut in the morning. Growing up, I’ve learned that we must be our own parent. There is no one forcing us to eat our veggies or exercise. We must love ourselves enough to do what’s best for our health.


There is not much that we cannot control in life, especially having a mental illness. However, we can choose to make the best decisions for our minds and bodies. We are in control of that, and when you think about it, it can be empowering. I challenge YOU to take control of your mental health by taking better care of yourself this week. Although at times we may feel helpless, there is so much that we can do. So, are you ready for the first challenge?! Here we go…

Self-Care Challenge 1: Personal Hygiene

  1. Every day for five days, take a few minutes to look in the mirror. Are you taking care of yourself? Do you need to take a shower or bath? Do you need to trim your nails? Have you been brushing your teeth?
  2. Choose one self-care activity to do. Whether it’s brushing your teeth, taking a bath, or using a face mask, make time for yourself. You’ll be surprised how focusing on a simple activity can help you be mindful.
  3. If you feel up to it, post a picture on your Instagram, Twitter, or Survival is a Talent’s closed Facebook Community using the hashtag #scmvmt. Show me your painted nails or your feet in the tub, so that I can cheer you on! Simple things like this can be hard for even those who don’t struggle with their mental health. Always remember that survival, in and of itself, is a talent!

  1. I find it easier to motivate myself to do things that feel nice, like using a nicely scented soap or body scrub, whereas brushing my teeth is harder to get motivated for.


  2. This is actually such a good idea, as I suffer from depression and mental health self care/love can be a struggle sometimes. I love things like this which can help just give you that little push in the right direction.

  3. Such a great post, this is something my Daughter struggles with unless I keep on at her, I find things like special shower gels or bath products helps the motivation x

  6. That really goes for all people. I don’t think we spend nearly enough time treating our minds and bodies right. Reading, exercise, diet, cleanliness, sunlight… all of these things are important for a long and healthy life


  7. I’ve been doing a 7-day healthcare challenge. One of the most important goals of self-care is to slow down and shut out my digital world so I can relax and focus for at least one hour each day.

  8. Aw! It breaks my heart to think that what others take for granted/do/think is normal daily is a struggle for some. Thank you for really making me more aware with what others may struggle with. Mental illness is a real thing!

  9. This is a wonderful challenge. I think we often get so bogged down in all the day-to-day life stuff, that we forget to really ask ourselves this question. It’s a good one to be aware of and ask regularly.
