- What genres am I looking for?
I am looking for true mental illness stories written by writers with a mental illness for the Stories of Survival category. I especially love stories that humanize individuals with a poorly understood illness. Bring the reader into your life and consider explaining things like when your symptoms first started to appear, what being diagnosed was like, how you came to terms with it, how you deal with discrimination, etc. If you make a connection with writing or creativity, all the better!
Right now, I’m specifically looking for more pieces on:
- ADD & ADHD
- Personality Disorders
- Neurodivergent writers
- Introverted writers
- Empathic writers
- Highly sensitive writers
Individuals with a condition not already discussed on the blog are given priority.
- What am I NOT looking for?
Poetry, news articles, or fiction. My readers want to read about your life directly. You can read an excellent example here.
- How long does the piece need to be?
Mental illness stories should be at least 300 words, but don’t stress yourself out and spend too much time on it.
- What does the piece need to include?
Please send a few sentences about yourself in the third person, as well as a photo of yourself. You can include your social media links and website here. If you want to publish your piece anonymously, this is totally fine! Just be sure to let me know.
- Any tips before submitting the piece?
Yes! Be authentic. Readers want the real you, not a fabricated version. Avoid longer sentences that the reader will get lost in. Hemingwayapp.com is a great resource for that. Also, consider including personal photos and subheadings. Edits will be made for SEO and grammar purposes.
- Does it pay?
No, unfortunately. I wish I could pay for each blog post, but I simply can’t afford it. If you’d like to help me afford to support disabled writers through Mental Illness Stories of Survival, please consider a one-time donation or becoming a patron.
- How do you submit your piece?
Fill out the contact form below. I look forward to hearing your unique story!
- Do I accept pieces that have been previously published?
No. This will hurt the website’s ranking on Google. The posts can be labeled as spam if there are duplicate blog posts on multiple sites.
- What if you want to write a general blog post about mental illness and/or writing?
If you’d like to submit a general blog post, I will be happy to consider publishing it on Writers With Mental Illness in a different category than Stories of Survival. This is a great place for how-tos and listicles. Fill out the contact form, and let’s chat!
- What if you want me to write a blog post to promote your blog or business and post it on Writers With Mental Illness?
